Two Windows That Matter Most

In Vancouver's climate, the timing of gutter cleaning matters almost as much as the frequency. A cleaning done at the wrong time of year provides minimal protection compared to one done at the right moment. Most Lower Mainland properties have two critical windows each year — and missing either one creates real risk of water damage.

Window 1

Late November

The most important clean of the year. All deciduous trees have completed their leaf drop. Clear the full autumn accumulation before winter rains compact and freeze it in place.

Ideal: after Nov 15th, once all deciduous trees are bare

Window 2

March – April

Spring clean. Clear winter debris and flush downspouts before the heaviest Pacific spring rains arrive. Catch any issues from winter before they become water damage problems.

Ideal: March, before the main spring wet period

Why Late November — Not Early November, Not October

The timing of the autumn clean matters. Cleaning in October means you are working before the main leaf drop — you will be back within three weeks for the real accumulation. Cleaning in late November, once all deciduous trees in the area have completed their drop, means you are clearing the entire season's accumulation in one visit. That is the efficient approach.

The specific date depends on the tree species in your area. Maple and alder tend to be among the latest to drop in the Lower Mainland — typically mid-to-late November. If your property has large maples nearby, waiting until after November 15th ensures you catch the full drop.

Do not wait until December. By then, several weeks of November rain will have saturated and compacted the debris, making it significantly harder and more time-consuming to remove.

The Spring Window — March, Before Heavy Rain

Vancouver's heaviest spring rainfall typically arrives in March and April. The spring gutter clean serves two purposes: clearing any remaining autumn debris that decomposed over winter but was not flushed, and confirming that downspouts are clear and the full drainage system is ready to handle peak spring water volume.

Skipping the spring clean is most risky for properties where the November clean was also skipped or incomplete. A winter's worth of saturated debris in a downspout creates a dense blockage that fails in the first significant spring rain event.

A Third Window — July (For Some Properties)

Properties with significant conifer coverage — particularly western red cedar, Douglas fir, or western hemlock — benefit from an optional mid-summer check in July. Unlike deciduous trees, conifers shed needles, cones, and bark scales year-round. By July, enough accumulation may have built up from summer shedding to warrant clearing, particularly if the downspout entry point is in the shade of a large conifer.

This third clean is not necessary for all properties — only those where conifer debris visibly accumulates within a few months of cleaning.

What Happens When You Miss the Windows

Missing the November clean is the highest-risk scenario. November debris that is not cleared gets saturated by December and January rains, packed by weight into a dense mat, and in colder snaps partially freezes. This compacted material is significantly harder to remove, adds excessive weight to the gutter and fasteners, and can cause sag and structural damage to the gutter itself over a single winter.

Missing the spring clean means entering the wet season with debris from winter still in the system. The first major spring rain event can trigger overflow situations that would not have occurred with a freshly cleaned gutter.

Common Questions

Best Time to Clean Gutters — FAQ

Late November is the single most important gutter cleaning of the year for most Vancouver homes. This is when deciduous trees have fully dropped their leaves and the full autumn accumulation can be cleared in one visit. Cleaning in October gets ahead of the leaf fall — you'll just have to clean again. Waiting until December means the debris gets wet, compacted, and frozen, making it harder to remove.
After rain is generally fine — we work in Vancouver's weather year-round. However, attempting to clean gutters during active heavy rainfall is impractical and can be dangerous. The ideal conditions are a dry day following a wet period, when debris is loosened but not actively waterlogged. We schedule around weather throughout the autumn season.
Debris that sits in gutters through a Vancouver winter gets saturated, compacted, and in cold snaps can partially freeze. This adds significant weight to the gutter system, can damage gutter fasteners and fascia boards, and creates blockages that are harder to clear in spring. The November clean prevents all of this — it's the single most protective maintenance action for your gutters before the wet season.
Fall (November) is more important for most Vancouver properties. The autumn leaf drop creates the largest single debris load of the year, and that material needs to be cleared before winter rains pack it in place. Spring cleaning is the important second step — clearing any remaining material and confirming downspouts are clear before the peak spring rainfall arrives in March and April.
Yes, for the most part. Vancouver's winters are mild enough that gutter cleaning can continue through most of the season. We service gutters year-round. The only conditions that prevent work are active heavy rainfall, hard frosts that make roof access unsafe, or significant ice on the roof or gutters. If your gutters weren't cleaned in November, a January or February clean is far better than waiting until spring.
